Burja

Named for the cold, north-easterly wind that rips through the vineyards at speeds over 200km per hour, Burja is a family-owned estate run by the philosophical Primož Lavrenčič. Primož is dedicated to encouraging nature to express itself through his wine, particularly from local varieties malvazija, zelen and rebula (ribolla gialla).

Zelen

Aromatic, with notes of white flowers, green apple, grapefruit and lemon. Intensely mineral, with a racy, saline edge.

The variety takes its name from the Slovenian word for ‘green’, as the must has a distinct emerald tinge. Macerated with skins for two days before fermentation.

Bela

Aromas of white peach, honey and toast. The palate is full and generous, with fresh apricot and pear fruit and nervy acidity. Restrained and refined, right down to the long finish, which shows a touch of phenolics from the skin contact.

This is a field blend of about a third each Istrian malvasia, rebula and lazki rizling, with a sprinkling of other varieties. After crushing, the must is macerated with the skins for 8 days at a low temperature, which gives Primož control over the extraction. The result is an orange wine with balance and finesse.

Stranice

A single-vineyard field blend of malvazija, laski riesling and rebula. The grapes are macerated on the skins for 12 days before fermentation and ageing in concrete eggs for 2 years.

Stranice is the name of the 1.6ha, north-east-facing vineyard. The soil is primarily flysch, which is dominant in the area, with a marl and sandstone bedrock base that promotes water retention. (Nerd alert! Flysch is a sedimentary rock composed of compressed bands of sandstone and shale that was pushed out of the sea millions of years ago. The most stunning examples of this formation are in Zumaia, in the Basque Country in northern Spain, where Game of Thrones’ Dragonstone scenes were filmed.)

Reddo

Deep, mouth-staining notes of pomegranate, plum and black cherry, hints of earth, graphite and smoke and elegant touches of violet combine harmoniously in this elegant, well-structured, joyful red.

A blend of pokalca, modri frankinje and refošk, all varieties that were considered locally to be too humble to make quality wine. With his thoughtful approach to traditional methods, Primosz proves the opposite is true.

Žorž

Primož’ love affair with pinot noir continues. Žorž is named after his mother’s family and is a selection of pinot noir from a north-west-facing hillside plot with sandstone and marl flysch soils. After manual harvesting, fermentation with some whole bunches is carried out in large oak casks, followed by ageing for 24 months.

Burja

Named after the cold, north-easterly wind that rips through the vineyards at speeds over 200km per hour, Burja is a family-owned estate run by the philosophical Primož Lavrenčič. His family have lived in the fertile Vipava Valley since the late 15th century. This region of Slovenia is contiguous with Friuli in Italy, and is similarly known for its white wines, particularly from local varieties malvazija, zelen and rebula (ribolla gialla).

Primož is dedicated to encouraging nature to express itself through his wine. He does this by farming the vineyards organically and biodynamically to maintain the biodiversity of the soil, and by working with these local varieties, the heritage of the region. The one exception is the vineyard of pinot noir that he inherited. However, he strives in the same way to allow the vineyard’s identity to shine through – a Burgundian wine with a Slovenian soul.
