The oak tones provide a counterpoint to the generous fruit without overwhelming them. The taste is rich and intense, with sweet, ripe tannins and a long, lingering finish.

The premium wine of the Martín Berdugo estate, produced only in exceptional years. The reserva spends 16 months in a combination of new American and French oak barrels, with a further two years in bottle.

martín berdugo

A young, dynamic winery founded in 1990 by Josefina Martín Berdugo in the heart of Ribera del Duero and now run by her son, the charismatic Antonio Díez Martín.

Central to their production is tinto fino, or tempranillo, the iconic grape of Ribera del Duero. Here, the hot, dry summer days make for dense wines with a darker fruit profile than their counterparts in Rioja, but cool nights and an 800m elevation provide structure and characteristic refreshing acidity.

At Martín Berdugo the wine style is decidedly modern, with plenty of pure, ripe fruit in each wine, but with a nod to the traditional in the use of new American oak. However, Antonio doesn’t let the oak overwhelm – it is there simply as a counterpoint, never the main star. He is always on a quest for improvement, and with each vintage the wines just get better and better. We are excited to see what new heights they will reach in the future!
