The Wines

sardegna
vermentino

Vermentino

Harvested by hand from 5 hectares of young vines. Fermentation is started with a pied de cuve and is carried out in stainless steel tanks without temperature control. Bottling occurs the following spring without filtration.

A rich, slightly nutty style, this vermentino is a radical departure from the cold-fermented, sauvignon blanc-lookalike churned out elsewhere across Sardinia. Truly Mediterranean flavours of preserved lemon, bay and rosemary are underscored by breezy, saline minerality that recall the granitic soils of Ogliastra.

Cannonau

The specialty of Sardinia, cannonau (aka grenache) is produced here in a youthful style. Bunch thinning is carried out in early summer to control the natural vigour of the vine. Harvested by hand. Fermentation is started with a pied de cuve and is carried out in stainless steel tanks without temperature control. Aged 6 months in neutral oak. Bottling occurs the following spring without filtration.

Dark, dense berry flavours of plum, black cherry and blueberry with savoury balsamic and eucalyptus tones. Velvety tannins and refreshing acidity provide a counterpoint to the rich, full-bodied texture.

Pusole

Run by the fourth generation of the Pusole family, siblings Loredana, Lorenzo and Roberto, this organic estate is devoted to producing wines that are reflective of the terroir.

Located in the province of Ogliastra, in central Sardinia, the terrain in the region varies from pebbly beaches along the coast to the towering Gennargentu mountain range in the interior. Pusole’s vineyards benefit from cooling air from both directions, providing freshness in the hot Mediterranean summers.

The soils are primarily decomposed granite, which find expression in the intense minerality of the wines. Cover crops grown between the rows of vines are kept in check courtesy of flocks of sheep that roam the vineyards. In addition to providing nutrients and biodiversity, the ground cover helps the soil to retain moisture during the growing season.

This holistic approach to farming underscores every operation at Pusole, from the vineyards to the cellar work, and results in wines that are a true reflection of this beautifully rugged and unspoilt part of Sardinia.
