Principiano

The heart of the Prinicipiano estate is Serralunga d’Alba in Barolo, where the Principiano name can be traced back hundreds of years. Taking over from his father in the early 90s, Ferdinando Principiano was initially enthralled by the fashion for souped-up, point-scoring wines. However, he found after a few vintages that the wines lacked a sense of place and the longevity Barolo is known for.

timorasso

Langhe Bianco

Brilliantly fresh, with scents of lime zest, green apple, ripe peach, anise and elderflower. The crisp acidity is balanced by the full, fleshy texture. A long finish with lingering minerality.

Timorasso is a distinguished white-skinned variety native to south-eastern Piemonte. Grubbed up in favour of the higher-yielding cortese, or to satisfy market demand for red wines, it almost became extinct. Luckily its quality has finally been recognised and now there are about 20 producers of timorasso. With its alluring floral aromas, apricot, apple and lime flavours and bright acidity, it has been likened to a combination of Chablis and Savennières. Its rich extract and ability to carry botrytis mean it is capable of ageing, developing honeyed and slightly nutty notes.

dosset

Dolcetto 'Dosset'

Crunchy, fresh red cherry and plum flavours offset by refreshing acidity and dolcetto’s characteristic tannins. The nose is unbelievably pure. A real ‘glou glou’ wine.

Dosset is the local word for dolcetto, and it is a tribute to the old-fashioned farmer’s wine. At 10.5% alcohol, it is a reminder that the Langhe produces everyday wines too. No added sulphites.

nebbiolo

Langhe Nebbiolo

Floral, crunchy yet ethereal aromas of classic nebbiolo. A delightful, raspberry- and rose petal-scented introduction to the nebbiolos of Principiano.

Made from fruit from Le Coste in Monforte, as well as some young vines in Serralunga’s famous Boscareto vineyard. A rare example of an unoaked nebbiolo.

romualda

Barbera 'La Romualda'

Generous dark fruit, red flowers and a hint of spice on the nose, leading to smoky, sappy flavours of raspberry, violet and mocha. Rich and full in the mouth, with plenty of fruit concentration to balance the refreshing acidity.

Pian de Romualda is a subzone in Monforte d’Alba that has long been recognised as one of the best crus for barbera – a rarity in an area where nebbiolo is king. The vines here are sixty years old, but Ferdinando still carries out major cluster thinning to ensure full ripeness and concentration.

barolo

Barolo di Serralunga

Generous and inviting notes of red cherry, plum, mint and tobacco all meld together, while the tannins are firm but ripe. Sweet floral and spice characters on the finish make this one of the most graceful Serralunga Barolos out there.

Made from young vines in Serralunga’s Boscareto vineyard and harvested late for an approachable, immediate style of Barolo.

However, he found after a few vintages that the wines lacked a sense of place and the longevity Barolo is known for. He decided to stop all the manipulation and go back to a more traditional way of making wine. His vineyards are now full of biodiversity and he is always searching for better ways to grow healthy vines without using chemicals. In the winery, he takes a minimal-intervention approach, using little to no sulphites. Each wine is allowed to express its own unique character, but all share the Principiano qualities of immense purity and focus.
