Halarà

Six close friends, six legends of Italian natural wine world like Stefano Amerighi, Francesco de Franco ('A Vita), Nino Barraco (Barraco), Corrado Dottori (La Distesa), Giovanni Scarfone (Bonavita), Francesco Ferreri (Tanca Nica), decided to buy a vineyard together to rescue some amazing old vines in Marsala that were going to be ripped out. This is Halarà (‘take it easy’ in Greek), a tale of friendship, collaboration and celebration of Mediterranean terroir.

halara-bianco-1

Halarà Bianco

Catarratto from forty year old vines planted over limestone in Marsala’s rugged interior. The grapes were pressed directly to vats for fermentation and a year of rest. Time has rendered a brilliant, golden wine with heady notes of almonds, smoke, sea salt and spice. This is incredibly compact, with a long, lingering finish that bears the mineral imprint of limestone. Sadly we received just a few cases of this wine, which carries a remarkable sense of place.

Halara Rose

Halarà Rosato

This complex, textured rosato is a blend made up of mostly Parpato (an ancient Sicilian variety that has now almost disappeared), with 20% Catarratto in the mix, from a parcel of forty year old, north facing bush vines planted over calcareous soils. Whilst the majority of the fruit was pressed directly, a few buckets of whole bunches were left to infuse, lending intrigue via colour, flesh and grip. A vivid, cherry red in the glass, this occupies that wonderful space between rosato and rosso, with gentle notes of blood orange, woody herbs and spice framed by fine, faint tannins. A masterpiece.
