Nothing much to do with wine, but Fly Fishing is a grapecircus passion. #justsaying

Fattoria San Lorenzo

A third-generation family farm run by the charismatic Natalino Crognaletti in the Marche region of central Italy. The estate is farmed organically and biodynamically. A glance at the wine labels will reveal that Natalino is an animal lover, and the estate is run to be home not just to healthy vines, but to the many animals that reside there.

verdicchio di gino

Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi ‘di Gino’

Fuller-bodied than the typical verdicchio from the area, this wine strikes a balance between crisp, fresh minerality and nutty almond complexity.

Gino was Natalino’s father, who worked the farm before him, and who had a keen interest in clonal selection of verdicchio vines. The vines are trained in the ancient style of alberate, which requires minimal pruning and allows the vines to grow through trees for support. The vineyard that is named after him is farmed biodynamically. 100% verdicchio, fermented with natural yeasts in concrete. 6 months’ lees ageing in concrete, 3 months in bottle.

Marche Bianco ‘Vigna delle Oche'

Le Oche is a white wine produced with only Verdicchio grapes from the vineyard of the same name. Spontaneous fermentation and maceration for 20 days, followed by an aging of 12 months on the lees and another 4 in the bottle.

It has an intense straw yellow colour; the nose is complex with notes of white pulp fruit, honey and white flowers. On the palate it is fresh, sapid, soft and with a long and persistent finish.

Marche Bianco 'Campo delle Oche'

Fermentation with the use of indigenous yeasts in steel, maceration for 20 days, malolactic fermentation carried out. Aged 36 months on its lees.

Straw yellow, the nose expresses a beautiful olfactory spectrum composed of beautiful notes of acacia, pear, apple, almond.
A floral touch, also of saffron, opens to a fresh taste, with good flavor, supported by a good structure and a certain softness. It closes with a particularly significant finish, on slightly bitter notes.

il san lorenzo bianco

Marche Bianco ‘Il San Lorenzo’

Golden in colour. Initially there are deep aromas of toasted nut and beeswax, which follow through onto the palate with notes of bitter almond and citrus peel. With some air, it becomes more lush and honeyed, with intense floral and citrus notes accompanied by bright acidity and lingering minerality. Utterly intriguing and contemplative.

Made from the best one or two bunches from each vine in the Vigna delle Oche vineyard and aged on its lees in concrete and stainless steel for about 9 years, plus a further 10 months in bottle before release. Natalino took a risk when he decided to make this wine, but the results are incredible, showcasing the immense ageing potential of verdicchio. The richness and weight of the wine make it hard to believe there is no oak contact. Very limited production, made only in outstanding years.

casolare rosso

Marche Rosso ‘Il Casolare’

Vibrant and full aromas of cherry, dark raspberry, plum and black tea. Juicy and fruit-driven, with just enough structure to keep it refreshing. An absolute joy to drink.

Originally the house wine of Fattoria San Lorenzo, we tasted it on a visit to Natalino and had to convince him to export it to us! This IGT wine could qualify for the Rosso Piceno appellation, but Natalino doesn’t bother as it keeps the cost down. Certified organic. A 50/50 blend of sangiovese and montepulciano, fermentation with natural yeasts in concrete, 20 days’ maceration, followed by 3 months resting & 3 months in bottle before release.

rosso piceno di gino

Marche Rosso ‘di Gino’

Blends the firm seriousness of sangiovese with the plush drinkability of montepulciano. Ripe cherry, plum and pomegranate notes mingled with hints of clay, black tea and herbs. Well-structured with plenty of plump but not heavy fruit and an elegant, lifted finish.

From the Gino vineyard that is farmed biodynamically. Soil is primarily sand. 60% montepulciano, 40% sangiovese. Fermentation with natural yeasts in concrete, followed by 30 days maceration. 12 months on lees in concrete, though 10% of the wine sees old oak to soften the austerity of young sangiovese. 3 months’ bottle age before release.

burello

Marche Rosso 'Burello'

Intense nose packed with pure dark berry, smoke, graphite and tobacco notes. Rich, supple and very appealing on the palate, displaying sweet, ripe flavours of plum, blackberry, peppery herbs and smoke.

Both the vineyard and the wine are named for the fuzzy miniature hares that chomp on the grass and weeds in this biodynamic vineyard. Burello is made from older vine sangiovese and montepulciano than Vigna di Gino. It also is the only one of his reds that we import to see significant oak. Made up of a 60/40 blend of montepulciano and sangiovese, the fermentation is carried out in stainless steel with natural yeasts, followed by 25 days’ maceration. The montepulciano then spends 18 months in oak, while the sangiovese rests in stainless steel on its lees for the same period.

Natalino’s father, Gino, dedicated his life to collecting and studying clones of verdicchio, and one of Natalino’s vineyards is dedicated to him. The reds are a blend of montepulciano and sangiovese. All the wines display tremendous intensity without heaviness, thanks to a pronounced mineral character and well-integrated acidity.
