Vinarija Križ

On the narrow Pelješac peninsula in Southern Dalmatia, jutting out into the blue Adriatic, sits Vinarija Križ. Third-generation winemaker Denis Bogoević Marušić and his wife Maja work a total of two hectares of extraordinary vineyards – dry-walled terraces facing south over the sea, at steep 45-degree angles.

trica

Plavac Mali 'Trica'

Very generous in style, displaying plenty of concentration balanced by refreshing acidity to keep you coming back for another sip.

Fruit from 60 year old vines on calcareous sandy marls at 500m elevation. After fully destemming the grapes, Denis employs gentle extraction to keep the tannins supple and the fruit profile fresh. Aged for a year in large old Slavonian oak barrels followed by a year in bottle before release. Bottled unfiltered and with minimal sulphur.

kriz

Plavac Mali

Quintessentially Croatian, Križ' flagship wine marries rich, intense black berried fruit with whispers of minerality and salinity. Denis' skill as a winemaker shows in the elegance, balance and utter drinkability he captures in this wine, despite the alcohol (unavoidable with plavac mali!), vintage after vintage.

Plavac mali is a cross between crljenak kaštelanski (the ancestor of zinfandel) and dobričić varieties and is often a heavy red with high tannins. Denis follows traditional winemaking practices and prefers instead to emphasise the mineral side of plavac mali. His wines have an elegance and lift and a sense of place that is utterly irresistible.
